What Is the Hanky Code?
The hanky code (also called flagging) is a communication system in which coloured handkerchiefs (hankies) are worn in the back pocket to signal sexual preferences and preferred role. The system originated in the 1970s within the American gay scene and offered a discreet way to communicate interests without having to say them out loud — at a time when being openly gay could lead to discrimination and persecution.
How the Hanky Code Works
The basic principle is simple: the colour of the handkerchief represents a specific sexual preference. The side it is worn on indicates the preferred role:
- Left: Active / Top / Giver
- Right: Passive / Bottom / Receiver
Key Colours
The colour system is extensive, but the most widely recognised colours are:
- Dark blue: Anal sex
- Light blue: Oral sex
- Red: Fisting
- Black: S&M / BDSM
- Yellow: Watersports
- Grey: Bondage
- Orange: Open to anything
- White: Masturbation
Historical Significance
The hanky code is more than a communication system — it is a piece of queer cultural history. In the 1970s and 1980s, before dating apps and open profile descriptions, flagging was one of the primary methods for finding like-minded people. Bars, clubs, and cruising spots were the places where the code was put to use.
The Hanky Code Today
Although dating apps have largely replaced flagging, the hanky code is experiencing a revival as a deliberate style statement and homage to queer history. At fetish events, Pride parades, and leather/fetish bars, the code is still very much alive. Many younger queer people are discovering the hanky code as a connection to the history of their community.
Poppers and Fetish Culture
Poppers are a staple of the fetish and leather scene — the very same community where the hanky code originated. The vasodilating effect promotes blood circulation and creates a relaxing sensation valued across many of the practices represented in the hanky code.
